Prince of Peace Parish History

A Mission of St. Gabriel Parish

Prince of Peace Mission was established as an extension of St. Gabriel Parish to serve the growing Catholic community in the Belfair area. Prior to the mission’s establishment, Catholics in and around Belfair gathered for Mass in private homes and later at the Belfair Community Baptist Church, reflecting a longstanding desire for a permanent place of worship closer to home.

A significant step forward came during the pastorate of Father Dennis C. Sevilla, who became pastor of St. Gabriel Parish in July 1986. Recognizing the pastoral needs of families living at a distance from the main parish campus, Fr. Dennis led the effort to establish a mission church in Belfair. Construction of the future Prince of Peace Mission began on August 16, 1990, marking a major milestone in the parish’s outreach to the wider South Kitsap community.

The vision became a reality on June 12, 1992, when construction was completed and the church was formally dedicated and named Prince of Peace Mission. From its dedication forward, Prince of Peace served as a place where parishioners could regularly gather for Mass and the sacraments, strengthening the Catholic presence in the Belfair area. The establishment of the mission remains one of the enduring legacies of Fr. Dennis’s pastoral leadership.

In support of the growing mission community, Father Victor Cloquet, a retired priest, began assisting at both St. Gabriel Parish and Prince of Peace Mission in 1992. His long and faithful service provided continuity and stability to the mission and parish communities for many years, supporting Fr. Dennis and the priests who followed him.

Prince of Peace Mission continued to be closely connected to St. Gabriel Parish through shared pastoral leadership. During the period beginning in 2003, when Sister Deanna M. Carr served as Pastoral Coordinator at St. Gabriel, sacramental ministry at Prince of Peace was supported by Very Reverend Anthony Bawyn, Father Pete Peterson, and Father Paul Pluth, who served on a part time basis to ensure the continued celebration of the sacraments at both worship sites.

In November 2010, pastoral leadership for both St. Gabriel Parish and Prince of Peace Mission was assumed by Father Phuong V. Hoang, assisted by Father Charles Schmitz, S.J. along with assistance from Fr. Ron Belisle and Fr. Pat McDermott who supported the need for Spanish speaking priests at Prince of Peace. During this time Deacon Romeo Jimenez from the diocese of Portland, would often visit to assist with ministry to his home countrymen of the growing Guatemalan community.

On July 1, 2024, The Archdiocese of Seattle executed the Partners in the Gospel strategic plan, realigning individual churches into parish families. At that time, St. Gabriel and Prince of Peace were joined together with St. Nicholas of Tolentino in Gig Harbor with all three campuses now under the leadership of Fr. Mark Guzman (Pastor), Fr. Phil Raether (Parochial Vicar), and supported by our permanent Deacons: Gil Pesqueira, Pete Freeman and Mikhail Alnajjar.
