St. Gabriel Parish History
St. Gabriel Parish traces its beginnings to the growing Catholic community in Port Orchard during and after World War II. After years of celebrating Mass in temporary locations, the Port Orchard Mission was officially established as St. Gabriel Parish on June 23, 1949. The parish’s first official pastor, Father Timothy Moynihan, arrived shortly thereafter and guided the young parish through its formative years. He is remembered for his steady leadership, pastoral sensitivity, and adaptability during a time when parish facilities were limited and the community was taking shape.

In the decades that followed, St. Gabriel was served by a succession of dedicated pastors who strengthened parish life and expanded its ministries. Among them were Father John P. Donohoe, who oversaw significant development of parish programs and facilities, as well as Father Patrick O’Neill, Father Gary Weisenberger, and Father Tony Haycock, each contributing to the parish’s continued growth and stability. During these years, St. Gabriel also undertook important improvements to its physical plant, including a major renovation of the worship space in 1983, which reconfigured the sanctuary and enhanced the parish’s liturgical life. St. Gabriel also brought in it’s first permanent Deacon John Ricciardi on November of 1982.
A defining chapter in the parish’s history began in July 1986, when Father Dennis C. Sevilla became pastor. During Fr. Dennis’s tenure, St. Gabriel responded to the pastoral needs of Catholics living in the Belfair area. This vision led to the establishment of Prince of Peace Mission. Construction of the mission church began on August 16, 1990, and was completed with the dedication and formal naming of Prince of Peace Mission on June 12, 1992. The creation of Prince of Peace Mission remains a lasting legacy of Fr. Dennis’s leadership and commitment to extending the parish’s outreach.
Fr. Dennis was supported in his ministry by Father Victor Cloquet, a retired priest who began assisting at both St. Gabriel Parish and Prince of Peace Mission in 1992. Father Cloquet’s service continued for many years, providing stability and continuity to the parish and mission communities
In 1999, Father Jerry McCloskey succeeded Fr. Dennis as pastor. Following Fr. Jerry’s retirement due to poor health, parish leadership entered a collaborative period beginning in July 2003 with the arrival of Sister Deanna M. Carr BVM as Pastoral Coordinator. During her tenure, priestly ministry at St. Gabriel and Prince of Peace Mission was supported by Very Reverend Anthony Bawyn, Father Pete Peterson, and Father Paul Pluth, who served on a part‑time basis to ensure the continued celebration of the sacraments. Father Tom Park brough stability with a longer-term assignment as Parochial Vicar.
In 2009, Father Henry Mulindwa was assigned to St. Gabriel Parish and Prince of Peace Mission as Priest Administrator. During his tenure, the parish completed a second major renovation of the parochial building, further enhancing the worship environment. In 2010, Fr. Henry also oversaw the reinstallation of kneelers in the St. Gabriel sanctuary, restoring a liturgical element that had been removed during earlier renovations. His leadership during this period reflected careful stewardship of parish facilities and continuity in parish life.
Later in 2010, Father Phuong V. Hoang assumed full pastoral responsibility for St. Gabriel Parish and Prince of Peace Mission, assisted by Father Charles Schmitz, S.J. along with assistance from Fr. Ron Belisle and Fr. Pat McDermott who supported the need for Spanish speaking priests at Prince of Peace.
Father Phuong took a hands-on approach to getting to know the parish and increasing parishioner involvement in all areas of parish life. He initiated the "Long Rangers" a group of parishioner advisors, to work together to help develop a parish long-range plan for all facets of parish life. He oversaw the preparation and implementation of the liturgical changes brought with the new Roman Missal, with updated Mass prayers and responses. Our ministry at Retsil Veteran's Home expanded under his influence, and he supported increased opportunities for child and youth involvement in the liturgical life of the parish. Under Father Phuong's leadership, the parish also celebrated its 75 anniversary, with a Mass led by the Archbishop and concelebrated by a number of past parish priests.
On July 1, 2024, The Archdiocese of Seattle executed the Partners in the Gospel strategic plan, realigning individual churches into parish families. At that time, St. Gabriel and Prince of Peace were join together with St. Nicholas of Tolentino in Gig Harbor with all three campuses now under the leadership of Fr. Mark Guzman (Pastor). Fr. Phil Raether (Parochial Vicar). And supported by our permanent Deacons: Gil Pesqueira, Pete Freeman and Mikhail Alnajjar.
From its establishment in 1949 through decades of growth, renovation, and outreach—including the founding of Prince of Peace Mission—St. Gabriel Parish remains rooted in faith, service, and a commitment to meeting the spiritual needs of its community. While the leadership of pastors and priests has shaped the parish’s direction, the life of St. Gabriel has also been sustained by the faithful service of dedicated deacons and the countless parishioners whose prayer, generosity, and active participation have formed the heart of the community. Through their ministries, volunteer efforts, and daily witness of faith, the clergy and lay faithful together have ensured that St. Gabriel Parish is not simply a place of worship, but a living Church, grounded in communion, mission, and shared responsibility for the Gospel.
